Rule of Thirds

polygamuse:

leethedeviant:

If you are just starting to learn things in the world of photography, the rule of thirds is a must-know principle.

Rule of thirds is a basic guiding principle or ‘rule of thumb’ not only of photography but also of painting, illustration and design. It serves as a guideline in the composition of your works.

It is an imaginary three by three grid (making nine equally divided parts) with two equally spaced horizontal and two equally spaced vertical line. It proposes that major composition elements or a subject of interest must lie along with the lines or its intersection (power points). In this manner, a more creative and artistically effective presentation of the subject is achieved rather than plainly situating the subject at the center.

Here are some tips how to apply the rule of thirds in your photographs:

Instagram killed photography.

pat-ch:

Parang tubig.

Bukod nga pala sa pagpapapansin ko, may nabalitaan ako. May isang street dito sa Maynila na uso holdap. Pati yung cherry mobile calculator na cellphone, kinukuha na.

Being careful not to fall into the same trap :’)

The Best Photographs tell Stories.: 10 Reasons Why You Suck in Photography

1) You didn’t read the manual

It happens to most people who just bought their new camera. The usual thing is to unwrap the camera itself and totally ignore all the shitty papers included in the package. One of the common reasons why you don’t bother to read the manual is because you…

Just When You Got Digital Technology, Film Is Back

minanget:

ibleedfilm:

I love suggesting reads, movies and documentaries about film photography to people. This one is worth a look. It’s from the New York Times, for heaven’s sake! Need I say more?

While reading the article, please do bear in mind that there is more to film than lomography. Lomography is, should I say, a branch of film photography and film photograpy is a large tree. (Wow, self! You’re doing it again with those lame analogies!)

What I can definitely disagree on is that the author depicts film photographs as imperfect. I wouldn’t say imperfect, but film has a more lively feel to it as opposed to something that a digital camera produces off the bat (y’know, without Photoshop post-processing). I find digital images too stiff that a little retouching is often needed. That leads me to my other point: if digital photographs are so perfect, why the need for post-processing?

On the other hand, film photographs can often stand on their own. What I mean here is this: an analog photograph likely doesn’t need post-processing.

Let me make this clear, post-processing is very different from processing.

Processing is when exposed film is turned into a negative then printed according to recommended (or through self-experimentation, personal) procedures. It is similar to what happens when a digital sensor automatically transforms light into electronic signals (ones and zeroes) that make up a digital image, only in analog photography, it is done manually.

Post-processing is done whenever one isn’t satisfied with how the initial analog or digital images came out. Like in Photoshop, you can enhance your images in the darkroom through dodging, burning and cropping.

To illustrate this further, let us compare the mindset of an analog and a digital photographer.

A digital photographer takes photos while already planning the post-processing that will have to be done when he gets home. I’m not generalizing here. Uhm, yes… actually, I am. But that’s what I have observed. There’s no wrong in requiring post-processing. I mean, we wouldn’t want digital editing software companies to go out of business, do we?

An analog photographer, on the other hand, takes photos thinking that he should already get his settings right the moment the shutter is released so that he won’t have to do any more enhancements on the final prints.*

Film photographers focus more on the shot. Digital photographers focus more on… I dunno, I seldom shoot digital to really know for sure.

* - Well, at least, that’s how I shoot. I hate editing. I used to do it, but I’ve really come to hate it (i.e. I’m too lazy). If a shot turns out wrong, I learn from it and try to get it right the next time. If I do post-process, I make sure I abide by Ms. Rachel’s credo, “If it cannot be done in the darkroom, don’t do it in Photoshop.”

By the way, for those who don’t know, I’m a hybrid photographer (dammit, I hate calling myself a photographer, I’m a hobbyist!), I shoot with film then I scan the resulting negatives. I don’t do my own prints—yet—as a darkroom is not feasible for me right now.

P.S. I hope I’m not coming off as someone who’s dissing digital photography again because I love it when people get offended. I mean—hello?!?—I still shoot digital from time to time. It has its merits.

lalong tumibay yung kagustuhan ko na magtake ng photos sa film! pero hindi pa ngayon. kapag kaya ko na lang. =D

Day 161/366: P&S Camera.

0-0000:

marlazyy:

When you use a P&S camera, it doesn’t mean that you’re no expert, or your photos are Low Quality. In fact, sometimes, P&S cameras could take photos that are as HQ as DSLRs could. It depends on how you take it, and the camera’s settings. So, don’t bring yourself down by saying “I don’t have good skills cause I only have a P&S camera.” or something like that. You & your photographs mean something. ;)

Btw, me myself started with a P&S too. :)

Preach! :)

STARTED WITH A P&S TOO AND STILL A PROUD USER OF ONE! :”>

It will always be about the thoughts you have expressed. It will always be about the emotions you have shared to your followers. Those people we gained here that later on we called friends are the ones who support us for who we are. Maybe, some people would disagree with your thoughts. Some would strongly go on your side. If the former part of this post that would still matter to you, think again on why you blog.
